When I was six, my greatest joy wasn’t toys… but scraps of fabric.
I used to sneak around asking the seamstresses in the neighborhood for fabric, bringing it home to play with my dolls.
My mother would scold me and forbid it. “You’re a boy, you shouldn’t play with those things.”
But I still played. Secretly. Sitting in a corner with the other kids in the neighborhood, each of us would sew a dress for our doll.
I don’t know why… But one time, I cut a 360-degree circular skirt. I sewed on a bust cup and attached it… And it became a long, flowing dress with a train, like a wedding dress.
At the time, I didn’t know what I was doing. I was just playing. But I remember that feeling very clearly.
The way I cut. The form I created. It was in my head, very naturally.
Many years later, when I learned to sew… I realized: What I had done when playing with dolls… was the “structure of a real wedding dress.”
And I started making it again. Not for dolls anymore… but for real people. And I still use that method to this day.
